Each summer, Sarah Lawrence College hosts over 250 high school and adult students for a period of one to five weeks as they participate in non-credit Summer Programs in Writing, Film, Therapeutic Game Design and Social Justice. Program participants have the option to live in residence halls and participate in social activities for the duration of their program. Under the direction of the Director of Professional and Summer Programs, the Summer Residential Life & Housing Coordinator plans and oversees the operations of the summer residential community. This position supervises a team of undergraduate Program Assistants and works collaboratively with program staff to foster a safe and enriching living learning community. This is a live-in position with on-call duty 6 nights a week.
Under the direction of the Director of Professional and Summer Programs, the Summer Residential Life & Housing Coordinator:
Ensures that program participants complete housing paperwork prior to the start of their program.
Coordinates and creates housing assignments for students, program staff and faculty in residence. Oversees the room check in and check out process. Inspects rooms prior to student/faculty arrival to be sure that they are ready. Addresses requests for room changes, cancellations, etc. Distributes keys and cards during check in, office and on call hours, including late arrivals. Maintains thorough and accurate records of keys/cards distributed. Meets faculty who arrive after check in to show them their rooms. Troubleshoots problems with key and card access to residential halls, liaising with relevant campus offices as needed.
Maintains administrative office hours before and during the programs.
Communicates with program attendees, faculty and parents/guardians before and during the programs.
Supervises and trains a staff of undergraduate live-in Program Assistants, who serve as resident advisors and provide assistance to the academic programs. Creates the Program Assistant work and on-call schedule, ensuring coverage and completion of shifts and responsibilities. Leads weekly staff meetings for Program Assistants and 1:1 meetings.
Meets with and responds to various needs of the residents. This may involve housing concerns, community, health, academic, or family issues.
Fosters a sense of cohesiveness and community among program participants. Works with Program Assistants to develop community building programming.
Lives in a residence hall on campus for the duration of the programs and is the most senior staff person on campus on nights and weekends, 6 evenings a week.
Carries the Summer Programs cell phone while on call and stays no more than 15 minutes from campus at all times while on call. Responds to crisis and emergency situations, including accompanying residents for off-campus emergency medical treatment.
Collaborates with the Director to address policy violations and conduct matters related to student behavior.
Works with facilities staff and Program Assistants to coordinate room maintenance work orders, cleaning schedules and building access. Collaborates with other staff as needed, including Nurse Practitioner, Graduate Assistant and Assistant Director.
Completes other duties as assigned.
At least 2 years of professional experience in housing/residence life at a school or post-secondary institution or equivalent is required.
Highly responsible, compassionate, positive, proactive, solution-oriented and a team player. Strong interpersonal, communications and organizational skills. Sound judgement and discretion.
Experience supervising and training student employees.
Enthusiasm for building a living learning community and strong client service orientation.
Must be over the age of 21 and possess a valid driver’s license and have no major moving violations on record. A background check will be conducted prior to hire.
Experience handling crises and emergency situations.
Ability to work on call 6 days a week. On call duties begin at 5:00 p.m. and end at 9:00 a.m. the following morning. There will be 24 hours completely off on a weekday, typically Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until Friday at 9:00 a.m.
Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Familiarity with the social and cultural dynamics of diverse student populations.
Schedule and compensation
The Summer Residential Life & Housing Coordinator works on campus from approximately May 26 - August 4, 2019. There may be some work prior to May 26th that can be performed remotely, such as coordinating housing assignments and reviewing materials for on-boarding to the college.
The incumbent must be available weekends and six evenings a week for the duration of the pre-college residential programs (June 16 - August 3, 2019) according to a schedule to be agreed upon at hiring.
Compensation is paid hourly and includes a single room with private bath and a shared kitchen on campus for the duration of the appointment, and a full meal plan when dining halls are open. Accommodations are not available for family members.
