Southwest Equine Hospital in sunny Arizona may be the place for you!
Equine Associate Veterinarian- General Practitioner / Acupuncture
Southwest Equine Hospital is seeking an experienced, team-oriented, collaborative general practitioner to join our busy referral hospital and ambulatory practice in sunny Scottsdale, Arizona. Certification in Acupuncture and/or Chiropractic manipulation and experience in sports medicine is highly desirable. An interest in anesthesia and pain management is also encouraged.
The caseload at SWEH is interesting and varied. Our clients are passionate about their horses and allow us to provide gold-standard, pro-active care for their athletes or family members. While we have many healthy “routine” preventive-care patients, we also have more than our fair share of challenging head-scratchers. The successful applicant must love puzzles!
The ambulatory caseload primarily consists of preventive-care, lameness, dentistry, acupuncture and emergencies (colic, ADR, wounds, etc). We have purposely scaled back our reproduction caseload, but there is ample market for growth if an associate has the desire to do so. The Phoenix metro area has a large equine population to allow a motivated and talented individual with excellent communication skills to expand the caseload towards whatever direction they are passionate about.
Associate veterinarians not only provide ambulatory services, but are encouraged to be primary care providers for medical and surgical hospitalized patients with the support and guidance of several board-certified specialists (Internal Medicine, Surgery, Dentistry, Ophthalmology, Theriogenology, Dermatology). The mix of ambulatory and hospitalized caseload is excellent for candidates interested in pursuing ABVP (Equine) certification.
After-hours ambulatory emergencies are attended by SWEH interns, with associate veterinarians typically providing coverage one night a week and one weekend a month. After-hours referrals / hospitalized patients are attended by an internal medicine specialist or associates (based upon rotation / availability).
Southwest Equine Hospital is a well-established (30+ years) 100% equine practice and fully equipped. The facility has two spacious exam rooms, large OR with padded recovery stall, an 8 stall barn with video ICU monitoring, mare motel, large paddock turnouts and an arena for soundness exams under saddle. Equipment includes 3 ambulatory vehicles, 2 wireless DR units, 3 portable ultrasounds, therapeutic laser, shockwave, regenerative therapies, video endoscopy (1m, 2.5m), and in-house laboratory (Idexx). Advanced imaging (MRI, Nuclear Scintigraphy) is available at nearby equine hospitals, with patients returning to SWEH for treatment and follow-up.
With >300 sunny days per year and recreation at our doorstep, Scottsdale and the Phoenix-Metro area is a wonderful place to live, work, play and raise a family. The central location of SWEH allows easy access to culture (30min to downtown Phoenix, 20min to Sky Harbor Airport) and recreation (10min to Hiking / Mountain Biking, 3hrs to Skiing / Snowboarding). SWEH has a “work-hard, play-hard” philosophy, and encourages employees to enjoy the boundless cultural and recreational activities available in Arizona year round.
